Nepal News report quoting police sources stated that suspected Maoists detonated a powerful bomb at the residence of Nepali Congress (NC) leader, Sujata Koirala at Mandikhatar in Kathmandu on December 2, today. Earlier, the NC president, Girija Prasad Koirala and Communist Party of Nepal (UML) general secretary, Madhav Kumar Nepal had held a meeting in the same house on December 1. Separately, the insurgents have detonated another bomb at the premises of the office of the election commission at Sichahiti of Lalitpur district. During a press conference in Kathmandu on December 8, the Royal Nepalese Army (RNA) spokesperson, Brigadier General Deepak Gurung stated that over 2768 Maoists were killed during security operations, while RNA lost 304 soldiers in sporadic encounters with the insurgents since the last truce was broken on August 27, 2003. Further, Gurung said that about 1380 Maoist insurgents have surrendered before the security forces and local administrations, in accordance with the amnesty policy adopted by government towards them since August 26, 2004.

According to Nepal News, the Government’s response came after people formed long queues in front of gas stations in Kathmandu to procure petroleum products and reports of shortage of essential items in the market following an indefinite blockade of major highways in the country by the Maoists. Reports on December 25 indicated that the blockades imposed by the Maoists in the Kathmandu Valley and some district headquarters seriously affected normal life. As Prithivi Highway and Tribhuvan Rajpath that link the Kathmandu Valley to the districts remained mostly closed, the supply system, mainly that of fuel, was affected in the capital. Highways in districts surrounding Kathmandu such as Kavre, Nuwakot and Rasuwa remained completely blocked. Similarly, the second day of a bandh (general strike) on December 25, called by the Maoists, paralysed normal life in Morang and Sunsari districts. District headquarters of Dang, Udaypur, Bara, Parsa, Kailali, Rautahat, Makwanpur and some other districts also was affected due to the indefinite blockade in places since last few days.

Nepal News, quoting Police sources, has reported that the impact of the Maoist blockade, on its fourth-consecutive day, has lessened in Kathmandu. Further, it said that security forces are posted in strategic points at the highways and Royal Nepalese Army (RNA) helicopters and trucks were deployed in opening traffic to and from Kathmandu by launching aerial and land escorts along the highways from Bharatpur to Kathmandu. The Maoists had announced indefinite blockades with effect from December 23 on different sections of the Prithvi, Mahendra and Tribhuvan highways. The blockades have been declared in the Sunachuri-Hetaunda section of the Mahendra highway, Naagdhunga-Benighat section of the Prithvi highway and Naubise-Bhaise section of the Tribhuvan highway.
